Presentations by BARDOT Ocean at the 5th OTEC Symposium

Presentations by BARDOT Ocean at the 5th OTEC SymposiumNovember 2017:
BARDOT Ocean was at La Réunion for the 5th OTEC Symposium, as co-sponsor and participant of the event. OTEC Symposium is an annual meeting where international stakeholders exchange on the state of OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) through different topics, from an academic as well as an industrial point of view. The 5th edition took place from 7 to 9 November 2017 in La Réunion, an overseas French Island in the Indian Ocean, and was hosted by La Réunion University.

Discussions covered topics such as commercialization and financing of OTEC and SWAC (Sea Water Air-Conditioning) projects, current developments and opportunities, environmental and social impacts, and technological advancements and issues.

BARDOT Ocean experts presented the three following topics:
- OTEC Master Technology (download presentation here)
- The BARDOT OTEC Lab (download presentation here)
- The environmental and social impact of OTEC - presented by partner consulting firm ACOA Conseil (download presentation here)

The two-day symposium concluded that both OTEC and SWAC systems are technologically ready and economically viable. The rising cost of fossil fuels, combined with a global desire for an ecological alternative energy, have been a motivation to develop these technologies. For a long time, the significant financial investment required for such installations represented the main drawback, which is now being overcome by the recent surge of funding coming from private and public institutions.

With its ideal location, La Réunion has been vouching for OTEC and SWAC for many years. Several projects are currently under review and the island is showing its ambition to become an industrial hub for marine renewable energies.
